Working/Oppoing from home. Big snowstorm rolling in this afternoon and the kids have a half day at school. So I’ll be part time stay-home dad, part time snow remover, part time office worker and part time Oppnaught.

But - tomorrow I go to the Chicago Auto Show - on Media Day no less so no crowds! Yay!

I’ve got the inspections on our house this morning, which means I’m taking the morning off work to get the dogs out of Dodge for awhile. The inspector being eaten by the head of household security would probably hurt our cause. We might go for a little hike nearby, or I’ll show them thier new neighborhood.

We’re performing the score for a screening of Jurassic Park on Friday night at the Long Center. Should be lots of fun. Show is completely sold out, has been for weeks. Then next weekend I’m off to my orchestra in Abilene for a pops concert titled “Music of the Knight.” It features tunes by Sir Elton John, Sir Paul McCartney, and Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. Cheesy arrangements of cheesy music, but it should be fun too.

I want to improve my CAD skills, will change some designs (that block is too long man!) I want to make oval pistons like that Honda racing bike... But to shorten the block (also change the spacing between cylinders) plus, the crank is not giving the piston enough stroke so I need to make it’s diameter a bit wider.

When I was in high school (early 80s), I took a drafting class. Pencils, triangles, T-squares, ellipse templates. You get the idea. I loved it. At the time, what I really wanted to be was a cartographer. I was obsessed with the hand-drawn maps of the 40s and 50s and earlier. I’m not sure I would have the same love for CAD. I think I missed my calling.

Oh, that sounds great! I can’t draw for crap but I love CAD! I can’t say I love cartography but I do love maps and the data they can provide! Geography in general to mee is very interesting

I’m still a beginner so its always a bit like one step forward two steps back.... I had to redesign thecrankshaft various times for instance and those connecting rods still need to be divided in half so that the can actually be connected...

But 40th time is the charm! I’ll eventually get all the parts (and given that I don’t have an understanding of how to make the inventor electronics work... It will have a mechanical dohc)

Timing is going to be a real pain in the ass to calculate.

Drafting class is what got me started on my career path as well. Thought hard about going to architecture school, but “chickened out” and went for civil engineering. Bailed on that after 3 years (after really enjoying my CAD classes), and ended up in a fine art program with the thought to eventually pursue architecture. They added a graphic design program after my first year, and it was perfect for me. Just loved school those last couple years. Got my BFA, moved to a bigger city, but had a hard time finding a good job. Ended up scoring a technical job for an oil & gas company, helping geologists create maps and cross-sections. Learned a lot and years later went back for some graduate level GIS classes. My day job isn’t very creative, but it fits perfectly with my skill set and aptitude (and is low stress and pays very well). I feed my creative side with freelance logo design work on the side. I feel ridiculously fortunate to be where I’m at. Tons of thanks go to my old neighbor, a geologist who encouraged me to come apply for a job in his group. No clue where I’d be now professionally without that kindness he showed me.

I can’t afford the ridiculous inventor licence, but theres a great deal of CAD software that could entretain you for quite a long time without busting the bank!

If you liked drafting you would probably enjoy drawing in CAD, but many softwares aren’t exactly user friendly... So do binge on tutorials!

Sounds like you’ve landed in a good spot. Congratulations. There are many who can’t say that. When I was finishing my doctorate, I made the short list for a few college teaching jobs. In the interview, they would always ask me why I wanted the job (I need the money, DUH!). But my response was always this: “I can look back through my life and say that if it hadn’t been for this person or that person I wouldn’t be where I am today. If I can retire one day and have at least one person say, ‘If it weren’t for Dr. Ttyymmnn, I wouldn’t be where I am today,’ then I will feel like I have been successful.” I had a Latin teacher in high school (who was also the overnight DJ on the local rock radio station, which was pretty cool), and she was that person for me, a steady rock and intellectual inspiration during some difficult times. I saw her a few years ago, and told her how important she had been to me. She was honored, and a bit surprised to hear it, but she also said that I may never meet the person I inspire. I may be playing for some kid in the audience who will be inspired to do something with their life because of what they heard me do. And that’s a powerful thought, and a powerful motivator.

There is a music publishing software called Finale. It’s an extremely powerful program, but it also has a very steep learning curve. And you never use it without wanting to throw the computer out the window at least once. But it very much appeals to my inner draftsman. The program has an algorithm that spaces the notes mathematically, but I always go in and drag them manually to make it more appealing to the eye. I think I would have enjoyed being an old-school music copyist as well. It has a very similar skill set to drafting.

Thanks. Love that desire and perspective to inspire others to chase their passion or find their true calling, and good on you for sharing that with her. In the future, I look forward to finding a way to expose more kids to the GIS profession. I’m guessing a lot of kids who would be perfect for it have no idea that jobs like it exist.

You just have to get used to the way the program thinks. The biggest problem with computers is that they only do what we tell them to do, not what we want them to do.

Actually, it was Kinko’s. And as far as punch-the-clock jobs go, it was pretty good. Worked there for 10 years, rose to level of production manager. I think that job also appealed to my inner draftsman with its sense of order.

I’m not sure whether doing a double major ( mechanical and civil engineering) or going for a master’s degree right after finishing mechanical engineering....

Nevermind that in this college mechanical engineering includes electrical engineering, so its already a double major... I can already sign electrical blueprints as a DRO (DRO=I see a plan and check if its full of shit or makes sense) but I want to be able to sign as many blueprints as I can!

I worked at a sign shop for a year and change - my first job after I graduated. I’d talk to the customers, take orders, lay out the design, and also help with production. The work itself was okay, but the focus on speed and quantity over quality was hard for me (and I wanted to be working for a real design firm). Also, it was a family-owned shop, so it was clear that I’d never be paid really well for my efforts.

Is this about the breakfast posts? Pish posh. I’m just teasing. There are plenty of people who have theme posts they repeat, much like a certain someone who has been spamming Oppo with stories about airplanes for years. Keep ‘em coming. I like to consider myself a multicultural person, and definitely a Europhile, and I like to see what’s going on in other parts of the world.

As for me, I had bran cereal with a banana and a hard boiled egg. I’m old, and need my fibre. Or is it fibre?

I think that was autocorrect in action. But it’s odd that it would autocorrect to the wrong British spelling.

Kinja'd!!! Svend > ttyymmnn

Because it’s autocorrect and never autocorrects to how you want it to.

So naturally it came up with the one you didn’t want.
